Eye Examination

Kelcher Optometrists provide an Enhanced Eye Examination which includes the Optomap scan.

During your Eye Exam the Optometrist will test your vision, determine your glasses prescription, check the health of your eyes and perform other tests including binocular assessment (how your eyes work together), intraocular (eye) pressure measurement and peripheral vision testing if required. At the end of your Eye Exam the Optometrist will advise you about any management needed and if glasses are required.

While the practice is dedicated to providing NHS services, the NHS basic Sight Test does not cover the new technologies and techniques that are recommended for a thorough Eye Exam. If you are entitled to a basic NHS Sight Test, you can upgrade this to an Enhanced Eye Exam for a small charge.

NHS eligibility

At our practice, we provide both private and NHS eye exams. If you’re under 16 or over 60 years old, or between 16 and 18 and studying full-time, you can have a free NHS eye test. There are other criteria too, like if you’re at risk of glaucoma, have diabetes, or receive certain benefits. If you’re unsure if you qualify, just give us a call and we’ll help you out.

How often should you have an eye exam?

Even if you feel your eyes are fine and your vision hasn’t changed, it’s important to have regular eye exams to keep them healthy. Most adults should get an eye exam every 2 years. But if you’re a child, over 70 years old, or have diabetes or glaucoma, it’s recommended to have your eyes checked every year. Your optometrist will let you know if they think you need more frequent exams.
